Operation Overkill
Today we got a drawing that would crash because the designer had duplicate pipes right on top of each other. There is a quick way to check for and fix this.
The AutoCAD Express command OVERKILL will delete duplicate objects, among other things. Either type in OVERKILL at the command prompt or pick it from Express->Modify->Delete Duplicate Objects.
After you select your objects, this brings up the following dialog box:
Notice that you can have it ignore certain settings when deciding if objects are identical. I can't think of any situations right off the top of my head where I might use this, but no doubt there are some you might think of.
The OVERLAP setting is the one I think you'll use most. This will delete identical objects right on top of each other. It will NOT however delete lines that partially overlap each other, as least as far as our tests have shown. This is a good thing because sometimes you do have a pipe that runs part way down another pipe - i.e. a NY riser nipple or a riser nipple starter piece that runs atop a main
I don't recommend using the END to END option since that will combine all pipes on a branch line into one pipe.
Play around with it and feel free to report anything you have learned about it.

thanks for the tip Art!
