Just a quick note to say the following:
If you have Windows XP, then you cannot 'upgrade' to Windows 7. You will have to do a full install of Windows 7 and then reinstall all your software.
If you have Windows Vista, then you will be able to upgrade directly to Windows 7, no re-installation necessary.
That is all
True, a big problem is that Windows 7 usually cannot find your hard disk when upgrading. It uses the virtual disk manager service to locate disks. The problem is that SATA drives were coming out just as Vista came out and then 7. Vista know's how to handle the SATA drives but XP's virtual disk service cannot sometimes. If you do a new install and choose not to format (erase) the drive your old program files and windows settings will be saved in a folder called windows.old . You have to re-install all propgrams after you install Windows 7. The files in Windows.old are there so you can recover files and settings for your old programs.
